The 5 Best Cities for Aspiring Rappers and Singers

los_angelesA lot of people say you should first get big in your city before you venture out into another market. But I don’t know if I agree with that. I think it’s always a good idea to go to where the music is. And so does Cherie Nelson at MusicThinkTank.com.

She compiled a list of the 5 top music cities in the United States that you might consider moving to as an up and coming musician.

Here’s her list:

  • Portland, Oregon
  • Seattle, Washington
  • Los Angeles, California
  • Nashville, Tennessee
  • Austin, Texas

That sounds about right but Portland definitely surprised me – I might have to add it to the list of cities to visit one day.

Here’s the original article with her reasoning for picking each city.

One thing though, I’d add New York City to that list – especially in the hip-hop game. It’s the birthplace.

What do you think about this? Do you think it’s a good idea to move abroad to pursue music? What about your top 5 picks?

I was listening to an interview with Krayze Bone from Bone Thugs N Harmony the other day and it was the same story. They went out to LA – they had nothing, but still just made the push out there – and knocked on doors. Things ended up working out pretty good for them.

Now, we’re not suggesting or recommending that you pack up and move miles away from home without a plan or on the hopes you’ll get discovered. A lot of people go and fail, so that’s a real possibility.
