Frequently Asked Questions About Rapping

Some of the most common things to know about making music.

Where Did Rap Originate?

Rapping as an art form traces it’s roots to Jamaican “toasting” culture. But in terms of Hip-Hop culture, it originated in a borough of New York, New York in the late 70s and early 80s.

Are Rapping and Singing the Same?

Traditionally, no, rapping was much more of a rhythmic style of saying poetry/lyrics, whereas singing was much more about melody. But melody has always played a part in the delivery of some rap and within rap songs in general, as well. More recently, however, a lot of rappers make melody a much more integral part of their lyrics and performance. So the lines do tend to blur sometimes.

When Did Rapping Become Popular?

Rap music has been a popular genre of music since at least the late 80s and early 90s. Although the artform started much before that, the music gained mainstream popularity around that time and continued to snowball into the global phenomenon it was until it surpassed “pop music” as the #1 genre in the world in 2018.
